If you want to have a dress made but are far away and unable to visit the tailor in person, what should you do? For a regular outfit, you can still arrange a day to visit the shop to get measured. However, for something as significant as ordering a wedding outfit but being too busy with various commitments, knowing how to take your own measurements for your wedding dress is a highly effective solution. Providing these measurements will make it easier for the bridal shop to advise you and help you choose the perfect wedding dress style for you.
To ensure your wedding outfit is tailored perfectly, you need to know how to accurately measure the circumference of your body. Today, Nicole Bridal will introduce you to the most precise and accurate way to take measurements for your wedding dress.
Preparation before taking
- A measuring tape. Pay attention to check the numbered markings on both ends to ensure accuracy.
- Wear a well-fitting outfit to take accurate measurements.
- Stand up straight, look straight ahead, keep your arms and shoulders straight.

Bridal sizing guide
- Shoulder width measurement: Place the measuring tape from one shoulder bone across to the other shoulder bone.
- Arm length measurement: Measure from the point where the shoulder and sleeve meet to the wrist crease at the base of the thumb for long sleeves, for short sleeves measure from the shoulder to the middle of the upper arm and from there to the wrist.
- Arm circumference measurement: Place the measuring tape at the widest point of the arm, similar to the neck, as the arm has muscle movement, so when measuring, loosen the tape slightly.
- Bust circumference measurement: Measure around the fullest part of the chest. Make sure the tape follows the natural circle, not skewed.
- Underbust measurement: Measure from the highest point of the shoulder to the highest point of the chest.
- Waist circumference measurement: Measure around the narrowest part of the waist.
- Underwaist measurement: Measure from the top of the shoulder down to the hip.
- Hip circumference measurement: Measure around the fullest part of the hip where the length of the dress ends.
- Dress length measurement: Measure from the top of the shoulder down to the desired length.
Note: For women, you need to measure all 9 steps, while for men, you only need to measure steps 1, 2, 4, 8, and 9.
Taking your pant’s measurment:
- Waist measurement for pants: Measure around the waist at hip level.
- Hip measurement: Place the measuring tape around the fullest part of the hips, starting from the highest point of the buttocks.
- Inseam measurement: Measure from the crotch to the bottom hem of the pants.
- Thigh circumference measurement: From the middle point of the thigh bone, place the measuring tape, measure around the thigh (fullest part).
- Pants length measurement: Place the measuring tape from the top of the hip bone, extending to the ankle (the length of the pants depends on the desired style).
